Hydrogen Bomb

This memorable, if slight rockabilly tune by a former Bill Haley Comet blends hep-cat lyrics about "Jonah and a crazy whale" and religious doom ("Well judgment day will come some day"). What really makes this apocalyptic track unique, though, is that it somehow works in a reference to the Mambo. Had the song actually been issued in 1959, it would have made a nice record to spin in the fallout shelter.

Born Al Piccarelli, Al Rex played bass with Bill Haley and His Comets replacing Marshall Lytle in 1955 before being replaced by Al Pompilli in 1958. Rex co-wrote and played on Lou Graham's Wee Willie Brown and The Kingsmen's You Better Believe It on East West. Rex recorded solo on Arcade. In the 1970s Rex performed in a group called Al Rex and the Sound of Haley's Comets.

Hydrogen Bomb
Refrain: Bomb, bomb, hydrogen bomb
Hey bomb bomb, hydrogen bomb
It's a big loud noise and get real gone
Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb

Well, Jonah got lost in the belly of a crazy whale
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)
Well, Jonah got lost in the belly of a crazy whale
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)
He was solid man and dig that crazy tail
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)

Refrain

Well, Daniel was a real cool cat they say
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)
Well, Daniel was a real cool cat they say
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)
He did the Mambo with the other cats olé, olé
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)

Refrain

Well Gabriel had a horn that was all reet
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)
Well Gabriel had a horn that was all reet
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)
He was a real gone daddy with a solid groovy beat
(Bomb, bomb, the hydrogen bomb)

Refrain

Well judgment day will come some day they say
(Judge, judge, Judgment Day)
Well judgment day will come some day they say
(Judge, judge, Judgment Day)
And when it does we'll all be rocked away
(Judge, judge, Judgment Day)

Refrain
