Sputnik II: Al Barkle with the Tri-Tones [1957]

This goofy love song to the Russian satellite is probably the dumbest Sputnik song ever written, but it is undeniably catchy. The song begins with the singer emulating Sputnik's familiar "beeps" which were famously transmitted at a low frequency as the spacecraft orbited the earth. Some perceived the "beeps" to be a calculated electronic boast engineered by the Soviets to further humiliate America (the then-limping opponent in the "space race").

Not much is known about the California-based Barkle other than some of his recording history. Barkle cut sides for Vita, Frantic, M&M and Koo Koo, Fiddle and Bow, Polkaland and Voice of Country. Songwriter Les Kangas made a career out of novelty material, and later wrote a song for the Collins Kids, Beetle Bug Bop.

Sputnik II: Al Barkle with the Tri-Tones [1957]

Beep beep, beep beep
Beep beep, beep beep
Beep beep, beep beep
Beep, (long wolf howl)

You’re just a flying Sputnik
Floating on ay-air
The-uh way you fly abou-owt
You don’t seem to care
I bet my love for you you’re not in view
You’re havin’ fun playin’ peek-a-boo
Leave the outer space
And join our lovin’ race
And start your spinnin’, spinnin’ ‘round my heart

You’re just a flying Sputnik
Losin’ your speed
Unless you change your way-ays
How can you succeed
Baby soon the fire will be gettin’ low, uh
Your heart becomes weak and the beat is slow
Leave the outer space
And join our lovin’ race
And start your spinnin’
Spinnin’ ‘round my heart

(Floating on air)

(You don’t seem to care)

You’re just a flying Sputnik
Losin’ your speed
Unless you change your way-ays
How can you succeed
Baby soon the fire will be gettin’ low, uh
Your heart becomes weak and the beat is slow
Leave the outer space
And join our lovin’ race
And start your spinnin’
Spinnin’ ‘round my heart

(Wolf howl at end)
