Atomic Telephone: The Spirit of Memphis Quartet [1952]

This gospel number repeats the theme of the divine-atomic nexus and uses the specially powered telephone of the title as its symbolic teaching aid. This track proved to be popular enough that a white quartet, The Harlan County Four, recorded a cover version, also for King.

The Spirit Of Memphis Quartet was formed in 1930 in Memphis, Tennessee and had an ever-changing line-up into the '80s. In the '50s they recorded for King and then Peacock. Lead singers Jethroe Bledsoe and Silas Steele and tenor Robert Reed and bass Earl Malone are heard on Atomic Telephone.

Atomic Telephone: The Spirit of Memphis Quartet [1952]

Lord have give us a great new power
For to use for the good of all mankind
Some people gonna use it to destroy everything
Bu-hut God didn't mean it like that
He wants it used for the good of all mankind!

Oh I have talked to Jesus
(Oh the a) -tomic telephone
(Well uh then) no man know the power
(Oh oh oh) only God alone
(Oh well then) it can cure the sick
Or destroy the people
With one sweep of power
Known by God alone

Oh, God is not too busy
To know the sins of man, and
You may hear from Heaven
You may feel His hand
If you are in trouble
And afraid of all mankind, yeah
Pick up the atomic telephone
And get Him on the line

Yeah, I've done talked to Jesus
(On the a) -tomic telephone
(Oh well then) no man know the power
(Oh oh oh) only God alone
(Oh law then) it can cure the sick
Or destroy the people
With one sweep of power
Known by God alone

Oh the farthest call to Heaven
There will be no charge
Just like poor man Noah
Who prayed from an ark
You can ask your God
Just what to do
He'll lead you from the wilderness
And out of the dark

Yeah, I've done talked to Jesus
(On the a) -tomic telephone
(Oh and then) no man knows the power
(Oh oh oh) only God alone
(Oh law then) it can cure the sick
Or destroy the people
With one sweep of power
Known by God alone

Yeah, I've done talked to Jesus
(On the a) -tomic telephone
(Oh well then) no man knows the power
(Oh oh oh) only God alone
(Oh Lord then) it can cure the sick
Or destroy the people
With one sweep of power
Known by God alone
